Oceanographer and Early Career Researcher Inan Ilkay Rodrigo shares his experience at the SOCIB Glider Facility.
While field deployments are often the highlight of glider training, Inan’s stay coincided with two severe back-to-back storm events, with wave heights reaching 5.5 m 🌪️🌊. Under these conditions, ship based operations were not possible. Despite this, the week was highly productive 🔬✨

Inan gained experience with:
🛠️ Glider ballasting and pre deployment sensor testing
📊 Data correction, processing, and visualisation workflows
💻 Developing scripts for data reading and analysis
🧭 Mission planning, from logistics and ship traffic to sensor frequency, energy use, and real time data delivery
🌍 Designing deployment scenarios for future missions in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, tailored to specific scientific questions
At AQUARIUS we are committed to training the next generation of ocean scientists, so check out our open training offers and apply before the deadline
