AR7E-2026

Physical chemical, biogeochemical chemical, and biological observations from Ireland to Greenland

Funded by AQUARIUS Transnational Access Call 1

The AR7E-2026 project aims to conduct hydrographic and biological observations from Ireland to Greenland.

Region of Operation: Subpolar North Atlantic (SPNA) chemical, Atlantic-Artic
Research Infrastructure Used: RV Celtic Explorer

“As our capability to monitor and understand the ocean continues to expand, from the circulation of heat and carbon to microbial biological dynamics, it’s exciting to contribute to observing a region significant both for its role in global climate and the importance of local marine ecosystems. The infrastructure access provided by AQUARIUS facilitates collaboration and enables us to collect a whole range of data to form a better picture of the relationships between biological, biogeochemical, and physical processes.”

MAIN OBJECTIVES

The AR7E-2026 project aims to conduct hydrographic and biological observations from Ireland to Greenland. Using ship-based measurements, it will extend climate-quality time series of physical and biogeochemical variables used to monitor transports into and out of the eastern subpolar North Atlantic (SPNA), and initiate systematic biological observations linking plankton community composition to other ocean parameters. This will improve understanding of ecological processes and connectivity in the eastern SPNA, from the deep ocean to the Greenlandic boundary.
