Description
General Information
As Ireland’s National Oceanographic Data Centre (NODC), the Marine Institute plays a leading role in marine data management and availability for over 30 years. It operates a number of well-established data acquisition platforms and programmes that support national marine services. The institute also supports external and third-party data ingestion, management and availability.
Under its NODC remit, the Marine Institute is a national and international provider of high-quality marine data in line with global best practices. Approximately 25 staff contribute to its data management and services, actively engaging in numerous regional and international data networks including:
- Metadata Catalogues: Cruise Summary Reports and the Common Data Index delivered to the SeaDataNet infrastructure.
- Ecosystems Data: Providing biological and commercial fisheries-related data to the ICES.
- Marine Environment: Providing chemical data (e.g. contaminants, eutrophication and carbonate data) to ICES. Carbonate chemistry provided to GLODAP and IODE-OA data portal.
- Bathymetry Data: Providing seabed mapping data from the INFOMAR programme to EMODnet.
- Operational Oceanography: Contributing to international programmes such as the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) through Argo floats and glider data.
- Research Vessel (RV) Data: Including participation in GOOS and the Global Ocean Ship-based Hydrographic Investigations Program (GO-SHIP).
- Tide Gauges: Supporting GOOS, the Global Sea Level Observing System (GLOSS), and other monitoring networks.
- Ocean Energy Test Sites: Managing test beds such as the SmartBay Observatory and Atlantic Marine Energy Test Site (AMETS) sites for ocean energy development and sensor validation.
The Marine Institute has obtained accreditation for its Data Management Quality Management Framework under UNESCO’s International Oceanographic Commission (IOC) IODE programme, and also holds a CoreTrustSeal certification for trusted data repositories to ensure high-quality data management and long-term data preservation.
